Hello! I am Matteo, an MSc student in Artificial Intelligence Systems at the University of Trento and an AI Research Intern in the Deep Visual Learning group at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, supervised by Prof. Elisa Ricci.

My research focuses on multimodal and video LLMs: I work on streaming video understanding with Vision-Language Models, and on how long-video context can be compressed into compact latent representations without losing what matters.

Before Trento, I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science at the University of Padova.
Outside research, I have a long-standing weakness for anime and video games, and one of those games, DOOM, ended up becoming a research project.

If you are reading this, something about me caught your interest — so let me tell you a little more.

I was born in Motta di Livenza and I am the second of two twins. My dad introduced me to computers when I was little, and that is where my love for technology started. The first game he got me into was DOOMnot the new one, the original one that ran on floppy disks — and then Sniper Elite (the first one, of course), playing multiplayer with my dad and my brother. Fun fact: I was pretty good at it. They even made video montages of my gameplay, which you can watch here .

That is when I started wondering what happened behind the scenes. How does a server work? How can someone shoot from one side of the world and hit someone on the other side? How do cheats like wallhacks and aimbots work? To find out, I chose an IT track in high school — spoiler: I did not find all the answers right away, but I did find my first mentor, Professor Giuseppe Rossi, who made me fall in love with networking and systems.

Still hungry for more, I enrolled in Computer Science at the University of Padova, where I had the chance to learn from some genuinely passionate professors. One of them was Massimo Marchiori (yes, that Massimo Marchiori). His lectures were works of art, and one thing he said stuck with me: “in life, you need to ask how and why”. That same question is what took me from gaming to computer science.

I also have to mention Paolo Baldan and Michele Scquizzato , two professors who opened my eyes to the world of algorithms — the mathematical, logical explanation of how things work.

One day I listened to an audiobook by Alessandro Vespignani , and something in it blew my mind: his team had predicted the behaviour of mosquitoes to prevent the spread of disease. How was that even possible? I had to know. That is when I realised there was artificial intelligence behind it. I started diving into AI and wrote a thesis on a chatbot with RAG functionality, and I met another key figure in my growth, engineer Paolo Pallaro.

I finished my thesis, but my thirst for knowledge was far from quenched. The more I explored, from machine learning to computer vision, the more I saw how much can be done to help people: preventing the spread of diseases, aiding cancer research, developing new medicines. I had found my path, and that is why I am now pursuing a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence Systems at the University of Trento.

Trento gave me much more than a degree: a group of genuinely brilliant professors, and I want to name them, because they are the reason I came to love this university and this field: Farid Melgani, Andrea Passerini, Uri Hasson, Nicola Conci, Massimiliano Mancini, Giulia Boato, Andrea Rosani and Niculae Sebe.

But above all, it is here in Trento that I met another extraordinary person, my professor, supervisor and mentor Prof. Elisa Ricci . I have never met anyone like her: her expertise, her passion and her work ethic are the reason I decided to keep doing research. So, if any of my research has ever been useful to you, thank her first: she is the reason I am part of this world at all.
